On February 20-22, the Magic Valley Girls Soccer Team brought home a win after taking part in an international tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. Out of the seventeen girls on the Magic Valley Girls Soccer Team who attended the tournament, three sophomores attend Canyon Ridge High School: Vivian Peterson, Emma Campbell, and Peyton Saldana.
The tournament, widely known as “The Mayor’s Cup,” attracted over 1,000 teams from a variety of different countries around the world.
On the first day of the tournament, the Magic Valley Girls Soccer Team competed against two teams, where they gained two wins, winning against a Californian team 2-1 and a Canadian team with a score of 1-0.
On the second day of the tournament, they played three games. In their first match, they tied 4-4 with a team from South Dakota. Due to their tie, both teams progressed to the semifinals, and the Magic Valley Girls Soccer Team competed against a Las Vegas team and won 3-2, which brought them to the finals.
In the finals, they played against the same South Dakotan team. In the beginning stages of the match, the South Dakotan team scored a point. After the South Dakotan team’s score, the Magic Valley Girls Soccer Team pulled through and managed to tie the game by winning another point. Eventually, the two teams began kicking penalty shots. After the penalty kicks, the Magic Valley Girls Soccer Team won 3-0, ultimately winning the tournament.
Sophomore Vivian Peterson, winger and forward for her team, elaborates on the work they put in to succeed at the tournament. “Coming together like that is always something that we’ve been really good at, and just our work ethic, we want to win, and we know what it takes to win, and so I think we strive for that. Every game, every play. We strive to have that work ethic.”
Sophomore and center defender Emma Campbell gave her input on what qualities her team possessed that helped them win. “This team has been together for years. I’ve grown up with this team and the girls on this team I’ve played with since elementary school, so I feel like the bond we have is probably one of the biggest contributors to our success, as well as how experienced we are with each other.”
