Canyon Ridge High School’s ultimate frisbee team won state for the first time in the program.
On April 28th and May 5th, the team competed in the Idaho State Ultimate Frisbee tournament against the Angels(Nampa) and won 13-5.
They went on to compete at Utah’s State tournament on May 9th-10th to play Ridgeline and won 12-8.
“I was incredibly pumped and so excited because that was the first time that this program has won State.” said club president and captain of the Varsity team, Luke Beus, “I’m overall super proud of how this program did.”
Another varsity player, senior Chase Barlow, stated he was “very proud” of him and his team, who won Idaho State for the first time in the program and then went on to win Utah State as well.
Another player, senior Issac Bissonette, said that the team’s “leadership and motivation” were some reasons for their success in the tournaments. He too, said he was “proud of his team.”
The team’s head coach, Tony Silvza, said he was “happy and shocked” because “on paper [he] felt we had no chance of winning this year” but the players “put in a good amount of time” at camps in the program’s off-season and had “practiced all school year.”
Silvza stated that the program “lost eight senior players, which is the most in our history.” However, they “have the most freshmen class coming in with 12 players.” This makes him hopeful of a successful season next year.
