On June 1st, 2025, the ribbon-cutting ceremony for St. Luke’s new mobile Mammogram unit took place. Donations from Magic Valley and Elmore counties enabled the new mobile unit to finish construction.
Mammogram procedures include 3D screening that aids in detecting abnormalities within breast tissue. This allows detection of anything concerning for patients and doctors, and further action if necessary.
“One in eight women that we typically see have had cancer or something wrong, so it’s a necessary thing,” said Stephanie Schroeder, the supervisor for the mammogram unit.
Since the ribbon-cutting, the new mobile mammogram unit has visited 41 locations through the end of December 2025.
Out of the mobile unit’s 349 patients between the start of June and the end of December, 176 had never had mammograms or had one within the last five years.
“We had a woman in Wendell who never had a mammogram done, and we found an aggressive form of cancer. Had she not come in for a mammogram that day, she would’ve died,” said Ms. Schroeder.
Operations have taken the mobile mammogram unit two hours or more outside of Twin Falls, with the unit traveling to various rural communities, should individuals be unable to travel for screening.
“We’ve had a lot of community help, and I’ve created a flyer to where we’re going to be every month,” said Ms. Schroeder.
Donations and grants have provided opportunities for financial assistance to those who can’t afford appointments.
