Since the start of the 2025 girls’ basketball season, Coach Katie Hammer has served as the head coach. She is entering the season with a clear vision for the future of the CRHS girls’ basketball program.
Coach Hammer has coached a total of eight seasons of basketball. Before she became a coach, she played at the College of Southern Idaho, and won state her senior year of high school.
Coach Hammer’s goals for the season are to “win at least one game at the District tournament,” and to have athletes who want to play basketball. Additionally, she said the numbers grew this year at tryouts, with 42 trying out. She hopes to see those numbers next year as well.
Coach Hammer said, “the goal is always to make State,” but she isn’t too sure how that will go this year, being that girls’ basketball is still in the 6A category. The 2026-2027 season will be played in the 5A category. She explained that going to the State tournament is a better goal for the 2026-2027 season.
When asked how to help student-athletes who may fall behind, Coach Hammer explained that they conduct weekly grade checks, and she also helps athletes who need assistance during her prep hour. This involves having athletes attend classes where they are struggling for extra help. Additionally, when athletes have low grades, they sit out of practice and work on their homework.
Ultimately, Coach Hammer hopes to build a successful team. She emphasized the importance of creating a program that younger students are excited to join and one that current players are proud to represent. By focusing on strong academics, accountability, and long-term development, Coach Hammer aims to shape the CRHS girls’ basketball team so that it continues to grow year after year.
